The Rapaport Diamond Report™ is updated weekly according to world market trends, diamond availability and demand, and released from New York City. The list is actually comprised of two separate sheets, one for round-cut diamonds (which account for approximately 80% of the world’s demand today), and one for all other shapes of diamond - for example, emerald cut, marquis, princess, heart-shaped, etc - which is labeled “Pear Shaped”. Each sheet provides market wholesale prices according to the diamond’s clarity and color rating.

Even a cursory look at the Rapaport Diamond Report™ will quickly dispel a major diamond myth that different shaped diamonds are more expensive. Here are the REAL facts:

  1. Round brilliant cut diamonds are the most in demand, and therefore the most costly of all other diamond shapes.
  2. Your jeweler is lying and stealing money from you when they tell you a certain cut in and of itself is more “rare” or unusual and thus more expensive. It just isn’t true, and now you have the proof right in front of you!

While these reports have helped to regulate and create some buying and selling standards in the wild frontier of the diamond trade market, retail market prices of diamonds (ie, the price you pay for loose diamonds or diamond jewelry from your local ‘dealer’ or jeweler) is another story. A quick glance at these reports shows that the price the average consumer pays for the same diamond sold on the wholesale market is often up to 2 to 3 times or more that of the Rapaport® listing, and the price for a diamond with the same exact “ratings” can vary enormously. Why is this?
